I wish I had known about this oh so many years ago, it might have saved my 19 y old arab gelding. He had a lot of sand in his system when I lived in CA. I feed my horses on the ground now, since they don't get along well enough to eat out of a feeder. I do feed grain once daily so adding flax seed would be easy...
Do you have portions of what would be best for shetlands or minis??
Thanks for the advise!!

You are so right! People also tie to portable panels, Tposts, and wire fences. It amazes me mores horses don't get hurt. I've often wondered why there isn't more education on safe tying. However, my best teacher was a horse that was a puller. Thank you for posting this. I hope many horse owners see it.

I am beyond disgusted by this. I'm sure the Pro slaughter people are thrilled. They claim they will monitor the slaughter houses. Give me a break, like they monitor factory farms.

The horses are going to get slaughtered either way. Would you rather they get shipped to Mexico, where God knows what happens to them, or have them stay in the US where the slaughter plants will have to adhere to strict humane regulations? And lets not pretend Americans are eating horse meat. That's still as unpopular as it ever was. A large percentage of the meat gets shipped overseas for consumption, the rest is purchased by zoos. Using horse meat in dog food was banned in the 70s. http://www.barnmanagerblog.blogspot.com

I know a lady who has owned horses at least twenty years, is a Parelli fanatic, loves her little mare like nobody's business and buys anything the vet or trainer (or Pat!) says will help her in her quest to become a great horsewoman. She is trying. I have to give her that. But sadly, I think she belongs in this article. The last time I saw her, she was taking lessons on steering her horse around two cones in a figure eight pattern at the jog. And might I add (not trying to be ugly) she needed the help!

I really believe that all the disciplines could benefit from learning collection. I like how you asked gamers and other genres to give western pleasure another chance. Many of the moves that allow us to pick up and move our pleasure horses over will also allow the gamer to pick up her barrel horse and move him over before they get to the barrel. Broke is broke.

That’s simply amazing and amazingly simple. You’re right about lack of awareness. Most people, me included, would never be able to identify a stroke. What’s more, we’d never even think of asking these 3 simple questions that would help anyone recognize the stroke and act fast enough to get the necessary help. Your article spells out the steps very clearly. I will in fact forward this article to everyone I know. Thank you very much for taking the trouble to write this out in such an easy to understand manner. Stroke

Very lovely. I ride Western Pleasure myself and really find it much more of a challenge to train a young horse western pleasure and control than it is to do barrels and speed events that require hardly any finesse. I'm curious however how to get a horse to transfer its movement to the hind end, and if slow is not the way to go, then what is. All the shows I have been to, they have given the blue ribbon to the slowest horse. However I have read its about a fairly level headset and easy, comfortable gaits. Which is correct? Also, I most definitely agree with the fact that other disciplines of horseback riding should give WP a chance, too many look down their noses at these so called easy events and ugly horses. I wish more riders wouls recognize the fact that the competition is toughest in WP than almost any other class in Western due to the huge numbers of entrees and gigantic dollar amounts on these horses.
