Characteristics in a Great Horse

Many of us would look for what we consider great characteristics in a horse as making sure it has a pretty coat, looks strong, and seems to have a gentle spirit.  However, in the world of equestrians, there are many characteristics to look at when purchasing what they would classify a great horse.

Some of the characteristics to look for in a great horse would be things like the bloodline.  Thoroughbreds or a thoroughbred-cross is normally classified top in quality.  A thin, shiny coat is usually a sign that the horse has a high metabolism, which would mean the horse is very active and energetic.  You want a horse that appears to be light with its steps, can quickly change movements, and appears very agile.   

Whether you are looking for a superior racing horse, a show jumper, or just a fabulous horse to ride, always look for the superior lines and attributes of the horse.  The horse should be very lively and energetic which lends to the fast foot speed and agility needed for a great racer and jumper.  The pedigree Thoroughbred should have great spring power in the hind legs, so look for the long leg bone and strong muscles in the hind quarter.  As you examine the horse, it should also feature a long, lighter neck which enhances the ability for long strides in the running and jumping.

Other quality characteristics found in these wondrous thoroughbreds is that they are usually taller than the average equine and exhibit a great amount of stamina, speed, and courage, all of which make up the winning combination of a great horse.
